If I say half-zombie, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Cute anime girls with pale skin and bites. Thought so me to. Well, in Undead Darlings that is what we are getting and dungeon crawling with visual novel style conversations.
You play as Reginald “Reggie” P. Happenstahnce (interesting name right), who wakes from a drunken coma. He was in next to his best friend Pearl. Reggie finds out that while he was in a coma, they have taken the entire world – Zombies. Even his best friend Pearl is a zombie, however, she has kept her humanity. So is a Half-Zombie? As you make your way through the world of zombies and weird creatures, Reggie will meet more half-zombie girls. Who will keep him alive, as well being human, he can’t fight as they might infect him. So he is the packhorse for the girls.
Another crazy story that has a lot to offer, I found the story to be really engrossing. With a great cast of character , with intresting back stories and developemnt and good comidic writing.
In terms of gameplay Undead Darling will see Reggie and his hoard of Half Zombies going through the labyrinth like mazes of the world, fighting, looting and interacting with each other.
There are five half-zombies that Reggie will meet with three being able to delve in to the dungeons at one time. In the later games, having the right girl will be a matter of life and death. Each girl will have their own strengths and weaknesses that need to be used to help in the battles, as some enemies have crazy defence if you do not have the right attack.
Not only from a battle stand point is it important to have the right girls, but while traversing the dungeons there are visual novel style novel interacting between select girls. Allowing Reggie to find out more about them and there lives before being half-dead.
The battles in Undead Darlings rely on weakness exploiting, this is something that HAS to be considered in every battle. Not only will it make battles a little less frustrating, but it will also increase the multiplier that increases damage output. It only increases with weakness damage, one hit of something else, then it’s back to normal attacks. The is one more important mechanic that is a must that is the combo attacks where two girls use certain attacks one after another will do an extra attack that does major damage.
I will not lie, Undead Darlings is tough. It is not the hardest game I have played but for a dungeon crawler this one is up there for hardest. Even at the start of the game, the enemies hit like trucks and have mentally high defence. Made all the harder by the very limited inventory space, and the fact weapons degrade per attack. So from the get go its a case of take extra weapon or healing item. There is no hand holding here, and I love it.
Great cast, good writing, hard battles and a level of strategy I have not seen in a game like this in a long time. What else does a game like this need? How about so really nice visual novel style graphics and a over all cookie look to the game? We have that; the world looks lovely with very stylised battles and some interesting enemy models
I loved every second of Undead Darlings ~no cure for love~. It has a deep and in-depth battle strategy not seen in more RPGs. Some really great wrtongo and charaters. The game is bloody good and criminally overlooked.
There has to be more people who need to try this g out and buy it. It’s a must buy from me.
