Paper Dolls Original
Paper Dolls Original is a Chinese horror game where a dad gets trapped with his daughter in a haunted house. You have to face the deadly puzzles and wander the halls of this house to try and save your daughter. None of the puzzles in the game are overly taxing, the main issue is that they’re a pain to find as nothing is signposted, so trying to remember where a key goes gets relatively fustrating at times. For the father, you’re unfortunately not alone within the walls of this house as there are wandering spirits of the people who previously resided here. These spirits cannot be killed, and if you find yourself face to face with one, fleeing is the only way to survive the encounter. This was a great idea on paper, but in practice, it was poorly executed. The spirits can all be out walked, not only that, but our character can only run three steps, and I thought I was out of shape! Knowing that you can outpace the spirits take away the edge of fear. There’s also the fact you can use the save room as a safe haven (much like a lot of horror games) where the spirits can’t go.
The spirits can be banished by sealing the paper doll of the person haunting the house. To seal the spirit, you need an item that is close to there heart and a magical dagger that you stumble upon at the start of the game. This enters a sort of mini-game of pressing the right button that comes on screen. Once sealed, the spirit is no more. I enjoyed some of the lore that was added into the game. There are a lot of newspaper clippings and other pieces you’ll find about the family that stayed there and when alive.
Graphically the game looks poor, especially compared to the PC counterpart that looks pretty nice. The textures are all washed out and missing a lot of the finer details. The spirits especially look really poor when up close.
Sound design us decent, the audio and visual cues that trigger when a spirit is close is at times vital as it is instant death if you a caught.
I wanted to really like the game, but unfortunately, there was not much to like, it is only suitable for a one time play through.
[ Conclusion ]
Paper Doll Original has only one or two slightly scary aspects to it. With this being a puzzle game most of the time, you are left to wander the house aimlessly until you find out what you are supposed to do. I felt so lost through most of my playthough and I still finished in just over 3 hours.
If I were to recommend this, it would have to be in a sale, it had the potential to be something good, but like a lot of horror games falls short of the finish.
Epic Clicker Journey
Epic Clicker Journey is anything but epic, in my opinion. This is the perfect example of a poor mobile style game getting put on to the Switch. It is not the first, nor will it be the last, and this is a shame.
There are twenty different lands to visit each with a handful of nodes to clear out. To clear a node, you will have to tap the enemies that show up in front of you to vanquish them. In short, this is the whole game, with one or two extra bits added in. There will be loot to find in the world, mainly after touching a boss to death that can be equipped and upgraded with money. Money is gathered after tapping the monsters to death as well as selling old equipment. With each monster that is vanquished the player gains EXP, once enough has been collected, stat points can be allocated to make the tapping stronger. That is the game right there.
The game looks very much like a cartoon with characters are caricatures of famous monsters and evil, Freddy Kruger, female two faces and a Cthulhu looking thing, for example. I enjoyed the visuals within the game. The cartoon characters and backdrops had a certain charm to them.
The music and the sounds I didn’t take any notice of at all that made no impact on the game it’s self.
[ Conclusion ]
Overall Epic Clicker Journey is not worth the cost, the game is something that you could download on a mobile phone for free. I have to admit that I did enjoy the first fifteen minutes with the game, then I got bored very fast. I did like the creatures and monsters and the overall aesthetics of the game.
I cannot at all recommend the game in the slightest.
