SpellForce 3: Reforced is finally here on console after its initial release on PC back in 2017. Bringing the isometric ARPG and RTS genera together. Is it worth your time?

SpellForce 3: Reforced’s story is set some 500 years before the events of the first game. You take control of Tahar, the first of the mages of The Circle.

After being arrested for killing a fellow solider, in self defence Tahar went it alone. As they have always been an outsider, being the child of Isamo Tahar, the leader of the army defeated in a not too long ago war. Tahar wants to save the lands from a mysterious plague that is sweeping across the lands.

The story is written well, performed excellently and is you over the top high fantasy magic romp.

SpellForce 3: Reforced has two distinct play styles in this massive story. One being the run-of-the-mill ARPG side where you, the player, direct your band of super mages and killing machines around fairly large maps. And massacre anything that has a red aura around them. While, of course, helping the locals with side quests galore.

This section works really well with the controller and feels great to play. The addition of slowing time to select an ability helps a lot with the radial menus.

Real Time Strategy

Throughout the story of SpellForce 3: Reforced you will have to control a small army in an RTS styled battle. That works perfectly well on a console with a controller.

The RTS sections can seem a little overwhelming at first but are fairly simple to get to grips with. The RTS section is simple: manage the few resources at the home base and increase its health. Doing so will get more workers, that allow faster and better production of resources and units to fight with.

Your heros and army will then capture more lands and expanding your influence over the map. The systems open up more the further in the game you are with different buildings and units needed, as well as the accompanying resources.

This gives the RTS section a simple gameplay loop of capturing more lands and advancing on the enemy. While allowing for more in-depth gameplay and a challenge later on.

Overall, SpellForce 3: Reforced is a great game, with its mix of ARPG and RTS. That will have fans entertained and engaged through the story. There is a long of dialog and lore that could put some players off.

SpellForce 3: Reforced is a must by for all high fantasy RPG fans
