Commandos 2 – HD Remaster the game we never saw coming, but glad we got. Back in 2001 when Commandos 2 was first realised I remember playing this and fell in love with this classic and the RTS genera as a whole. The game its self was an artistic masterpiece, and the voice acting was top quality. It also had the over-watch feature that is now staple in most RTS games, such as XCom.

The game has you commanding a crack team of commandos with separate objectives per mission. These could be take-out a target, blow up a submarine (my favourite mission) and so on. Being set in WWII we don’t need to know who we are up against.

Gameplay is as I remember it well minus mouse and keyboard. SO here Commandos 2 has been mapped to the Switch layout. To start with this mapping takes some getting used to and I now and then pressed the wrong button. The game has a good tutorial section that will get you to grips with the game’s controls to a decent level. If you are like me and forget button layouts due to playing way too many games; then you can bring up the button mapping overlay at anytime.

The game plays out as the original does, making your way through 10 different missions with multiple objectives. There have been a few adjustments made to the controls. There is no a mouse curser so aiming feels different. When you decide to shoot, the aim line will extend to the max range of the gun. With a button press, the Commando will auto aim to the target. This takes away some element of skill with the auto lock but does not take away the fun.

There is only one real drawback to this remaster, and it is my opinion. With the speed of which you progress. In the original you could set characters tasks, for example hide dead bodies and leave them to it and move on with the objective. Now with direct control of each Commando, the game seems to slow down to a snail pace, more so after taking out a lot of guards.

Graphically Commandos 2 looks amazing. The original still looks good with its hand painted sets. In this version, we have far more clarity and detail everywhere. I was not expecting it to be as nice as this. The voice acting is till there, good as ever. It is a great overhaul. With no bugs, I found (always a plus).

Commandos 2 – HD Remaster is still a classic. From gameplay to art style. With a decent control change to make it work well on Switch. If you are looking for a good RTS you have to give this a shot. Even with the price tag its worth it.
