Alwa’s Legacy is the follow up to the little game called Alwa’s Awakening. It was a love letter to the classic NES platformers, with a few nice ideas laying the ground-work for its follow up Alwa’s Legacy. Where the foundation was built upon and improved upon tremendously to give us a great game.

The story follows our hero Zoe waking up in Alwa, having lost all memory. It tasks Zoe with taking a mysterious book and journeying around the land of Alwa. Defeating monsters and demons as she goes and recover her memory.

Just like its predecessor Alwa’s Legacy is not interested in telling a lengthy story,. There are, however, some really colourful and interesting character for Zoe to meet to give a bit of a story about the area that is about it. This allows for Eden Pixels to concentrate on delivering great gameplay and deliver they did.

The game play is so simple but is so fantastic I didn’t think I would have this much fun. Alwa’s Legacy is a non-linear metroidvaina with tons of puzzles and enemies to defeat, with some great boss fights. Zoe has access to three main spells, a green block, a bubble and a blot of magic.

With only three spells, one would think the game would get repetitive or stagnant. However, credit to the devs: they have designed the puzzles and fights around these spells and different ways to use them. Each puzzle Zoe will face will have a mixture of the magic thrown in there it is just a case of figuring out how to use the spells. Along with this, there are upgrades for the magic that will change how the spells work.

As Zoe is exploring the world of Alwa, be solving puzzles and finding new areas and of course collectables. Zoe will happen upon dungeons that she can tackle, albeit not a lot of them, making each one a little special. Each of the dungeons has a theme, just like in a Zelda game. The design of each dungeon will test Zoe’s use of magic and some really fun boss fights.

Alwa’s Legacy is a little short, I felt that, or I just wanted more time in the beautifully crafted world. The way the game will challenge the player with only three spells it done expertly. There is never a dull moment here. This is a must buy for any metroidvaina fan.
